If you are a loyal FireFox user then, this may be of interest to you! If you have noticed, in the  recent release of FireFox i.e. version 3.5, there’s no close button on the first/last tab. It may happen that you don’t care about such ‘small’ things. But for me it was quite annoying. How can the FireFox team make such a major change? Anyway, if you are one of those who ‘don’t care’ then the post doesn’t have much in store for you, rather nothing in store for you. But if you are like me and are already annoyed with the change then read on… today is your day! At the end of the post your problem will vanish in thin air!

Download the following add-on and restart your FireFox.. that’s it.. its done.

This is one of the best Wordpress plugins I have come across. It’s simply awesome. You can manage all your downloads on your blog/website with this plugin and moreover you get all the stats you need for the download. Moreover, it maintains the log of all the downloads with information like IP Address of the downloader, Date & Time of the download and which file was downloaded.

Anyway, I think I am diverting from the main thing that we are supposed to do.

In this release of the plugin i.e. version 3.1.5, those of you who are using might have seen that whenever you add the download, the ‘Posted Date’ shown is the 1st  of Jan 1970. I ‘googled’ quite a lot for finding a fix about the problem but phew!, no success.. I found many links which contained the disturbed user posting the problem and requesting for a solution. But no link contained the answer.

So finally, gathering some courage, I decided to decipher the code and try my best to fix the issue. I started with sub folder ‘download monitor’.  I checked almost all the files but finally the useful file was the one that was the last file in the folder, ‘wp-download_monitor.php’. Nothing else needs to be changed.

So let’s start the fun !!

Take a Backup of the whole folder before continuing…

1. If you have just stumbled across this post of mine and would like to try the download monitor on your website, you can download it from Download the plugin

2. Extract the contents from the zip file.

If you are not a coder or you don’t have that much time to do the code changes as explained below, you can download the modified file: Download Monitor [Posted Date Bug Fix] File Downloaded 21 times.

3. Open the folder that you have extracted. You should see a folder named ‘download monitor’. Open the folder and navigate to the file ‘wp-download_monitor.php’. It will be the last file in the folder.

4. Open the php file with any text editor you want.

5. DON’T PANIC !!! I know that the code is toooooo big… about 3400 lines… Hats off to Mike Jolley – the Developer !! I won’t explain the whole code but only what is needed for us to fix the problem.

6. Press ‘Ctrl + F’, the shortcut key to ‘Find’.

7. Now enter this in the search box (without quotes i.e. from opening ‘<’ to the last ‘>’):

“<input type=”hidden” name=”postDate” value=”<?php echo date_i18n(__(’Y-m-d H:i:s’,”wp-download_monitor”)) ;?>” />”

8. Found it.. !! You have hit a jackpot my friend !!

9.Select the whole statement i.e. starting from the “<input type=”hidden” ……to….. ;?>” />”

10. Replace it with the following (without quotes i.e. from opening ‘<’ to the last ‘>’):

“<input type=”hidden” name=”postDate” value=”<?php echo date_i18n(__(’Y-m-d H:i:s’,”wp-download_monitor”), strtotime($d->date)) ;?>” />”

11. Repeat the above process till you find the matching text.

12. In the whole file you would be able to find this text 3 times. If you have the line numbers enabled in the text editor, the line nos. are 1253, 2215 and 2431. This will help you to crosscheck and confirm that you are replacing the right lines of code !

14. Save the file, replace it and that’s it !! You are done ! Now onwards the correct date will be attached with the download. Try it just now !!

PS: The changed code has been tested for about 3 days and I haven’t faced any problems until this second. Still if for some exceptional case the changes don’t work or you face any problem, feel free to contact me any time. Just leave a comment or mail me at sapan.blogger@gmail.com. Hello to all the Yahoo! Messenger addicts,

Finally its a great news for all the Y! freaks… Moving out of the ‘Betas’ Y! launched the final stable version of Yahoo Messenger, version 9. The look and feel has been totally changed and it looks too good now. Also many other features have been added to it, main being the addition of Y! Pingbox. Now all those Y! survivors who felt ’something missing’ in their web site or blog will now be able to make it a complete package. I think you got it right. You will not miss your chatting even on your web site. Visitors will be able to chat with you using the Pingbox.

Adding the Pingbox to your web site or blog is a pretty simple process. But to make it even more simpler, I am adding a step by step guide on ‘How to add the Pingbox to your Blog or Web site ?’

So here are the 10 easy steps:

1. To add the Y! Pingbox go here: Create your Yahoo Pingbox
2. Once you are there and if you are not signed in, just go to the ‘Sign In’ at the top right corner of the page and sign in with your Yahoo username and password. (Note: Hope no one is a new Yahoo user here… If so, instead of the ‘Sign In’ link go to the ‘Sign Up’ link and create your Yahoo account in minutes and continue with the steps)
3. Once you are signed in you will be redirected again to the same page where we started with.
4. Locate the bright yellow button with ‘Create Pingbox’ written on it. I don’t think you would have much problem locating that.   Now what are you waiting for ? Click it…
5. Now the customization of your Pingbox will start. On the left are a variety of things for you to choose for your Pingbox and on the right you will be able to see the way it looks.
6. When you are content with the design of your chatbox, just get hold of your mouse and click on the purple ‘Next’ button on the left hand side of the page.
7. Select the size for the Pingbox, some may love it B-I-G while others may like it small. So as per your taste choose the size and if you want it to add it to any services given above the size selection just click on the respective button.
8. If you want it to add to some other place not listed there, don’t worry. There’s a way out. Choose ‘Code Only’ and press the ‘Copy to Clipboard’ button. You will get a nice message saying ‘Code copied to clipboard.’
9. Now there’s nothing more.. Just go to the page of your web site or blog  where you want to add the Pingbox and paste the copied code. As you can see it, I have added my Pingbox to the sidebar of my blog. To do so, open the admin panel of your WordPress blog and go to the Design tab. In that select theme editor and finally select ‘Sidebar.php.’ Add the code after the <!–sidebar.php start–><div id=”sidebar”> tags wherever you wish to show your Pingbox. To display the Pingbox in the center horizontally, do like this:

   <!– sidebar.php start –>
           <div id=”sidebar”>

   …………….<center>
   Paste your code here
   </center>…………..

   </div>
           <!– sidebar.php end –>

10. Voila, that’s it. You are done. Now you can even chat with your web site visitors.

The web site even contains search boxes for specific topic related searches. i.e. if you want to search for a specific video, just enter the terms in the search box titled video and select the search source i.e. Youtube or Google video or any other from their list and just hit the ‘Find’ button…. There you have a long and tailored list of the video titles from your own selected source…

Looking at the pros and cons:

Positives first

1. Vast collection of search engines.
2. You can have your own tailored searches.
3. The search box widgets can be easily added to iGoogle or your Google toolbar or Netvibes.
4. The dashboard is totally customizable and you can arrange the search boxes wherever you like and even remove the unneeded ones.
5. The sidebar on the search results page shows a good number of other options too, like selecting the time period for your search results, related articles and news, etc..
6. You can also send links for inclusion in the search engine.

Now the negatives:

1. If you are an eye candy web site lover then this site is not for you. (But then for all who can understand Hindi, it is “Dikhave pe mat jao, apni akal lagao..!!” (Don’t just go on the looks, use your brains…))
2. The home page is quite cluttered, it should have been kept somewhat clean.
3. If you don’t use the ‘Home’ button provided on the search results page and go for the browser ‘Back’ button then be ready to click it twice before reaching the previous page.

All in all the web site has more plus points and is really a good deal if you want search results from your handpicked sites. Moreover it is quite user friendly and too easy to use.

As per my ‘almost’ daily schedule, I sat in front of my computer to check emails. I successfully signed in my Yahoo! account and as usual the ‘Unread’ count in my Inbox had raised by some 3-4, I don’t remember how many were there yesterday, making a total of 190 (read “just 190″, bcoz  this count was achieved after rigorous inbox cleaning schedule last week)…. Anyway, “most of the time” I try to avoid replying to not so important and not so urgent emails. But today there was no escaping from it. So I quickly clicked on the ‘Reply’ button and the ‘Compose’ window appeared. Slowly and gradually I changed the subject line to some meaningful short sentence instead of the usual ‘Re:’ prefixed sentence.

As I started to type in the message box, my ’sharp eyesight’ found something new on the toolbar. Like a lightning bolt my hand moved from the keyboard to catch hold of the mouse and on the next moment the mouse pointer was on that new and strange icon. The tooltip described it as ‘Stationery’. Without losing much time I pressed ‘PrtScrn’ and here is the result.

Curiosity to new things is in human nature. So out of curiosity I clicked on the icon and a new window popped up out of nowhere. It was a small window compared to the size of a normal browser window and had a very clean look with some links on the left hand side and some small images to its right. I clicked on the links and the images kept on changing. I hovered my mouse pointer over the image and did as per the explanation in the tooltip, ‘Single click to preview. Double click to select.’ I kept on single clicking and the background in my message window kept on changing. So this is something nice. I like to send bright and colourful emails instead of that monotonous white emails.

Finally out of these great collection I selected a nice blue design and happily wrote the reply.

So now itself, open up your Yahoo! account and check this new feature of theirs. Also send some emails bcoz u have a reason to do so !!! And finally say with a bang Y-A-H-O-O !!
